1 In so far as the mind conceives the present existence 2 of its body, it to that extent conceives duration which can be 3 determined by time, and to that extent only has it the power of 4 conceiving things in relation to time (V. xxi. II. xxvi.). But 5 eternity cannot be explained in terms of duration (I. Def. viii. 6 and explanation). Therefore to this extent the mind has not the 7 power of conceiving things under the form of eternity, but it 8 possesses such power, because it is of the nature of reason to 9 conceive things under the form of eternity (II. xliv. Coroll. 10 ii.), and also because it is of the nature of the mind to 11 conceive the essence of the body under the form of eternity (V. 12 xxiii.), for besides these two there is nothing which belongs to 13 the essence of mind (II. xiii.). Therefore this power of 14 conceiving things under the form of eternity only belongs to the 15 mind in virtue of the mind's conceiving the essence of the body 16 under the form of eternity.
