1 All emotions of hatred are bad (IV. xlv. Coroll. i.); 2 therefore he who lives under the guidance of reason will 3 endeavour, as far as possible, to avoid being assailed by such 4 emotions (IV. xix.); consequently, he will also endeavour to 5 prevent others being so assailed (IV. xxxvii.). But hatred is 6 increased by being reciprocated, and can be quenched by love 7 (III. xliii.), so that hatred may pass into love (III. xliv.); 8 therefore he who lives under the guidance of reason will 9 endeavour to repay hatred with love, that is, with kindness. 10 Q.E.D. 11 12
