1 Whatsoever disposes the human body, so as to 2 render it capable of being affected in an increased number of 3 ways, or of affecting external bodies in an increased number of 4 ways, is useful to man; and is so, in proportion as the body is 5 thereby rendered more capable of being affected or affecting 6 other bodies in an increased number of ways; contrariwise, 7 whatsoever renders the body less capable in this respect is 8 hurtful to man. 9 10
