1 Individual things are modes whereby the attributes of 2 God are expressed in a given determinate manner (I. xxv. Coroll.); 3 that is, (I. xxxiv.), they are things which express in a given 4 determinate manner the power of God, whereby God is and acts; 5 now no thing contains in itself anything whereby it can be 6 destroyed, or which can take away its existence (III. iv.); but 7 contrariwise it is opposed to all that could take away its 8 existence (III. v.). Therefore, in so far as it can, and in so 9 far as it is in itself, it endeavours to persist in its own 10 being. Q.E.D. 11 12
