1 A man does not know himself except through the 2 modifications of his body, and the ideas thereof (II. xix. and 3 xxiii.). When, therefore, the mind is able to contemplate 4 itself, it is thereby assumed to pass to a greater perfection, or 5 (III. xi. note) to feel pleasure; and the pleasure will be 6 greater in proportion to the distinctness, wherewith it is able 7 to conceive itself and its own power of activity.
