1 From what has just been said, we understand what is 2 meant by the terms Hope, Fear, Confidence, Despair, Joy, and 3 Disappointment.[5] Hope is nothing else but an inconstant 4 pleasure, arising from the image of something future or past, 5 whereof we do not yet know the issue. Fear, on the other hand, 6 is an inconstant pain also arising from the image of something 7 concerning which we are in doubt. If the element of doubt be 8 removed from these emotions, hope becomes Confidence and fear 9 becomes Despair. In other words, Pleasure or Pain arising from 10 the image of something concerning which we have hoped or feared. 11 Again, Joy is Pleasure arising from the image of something past 12 whereof we have doubted the issue. Disappointment is the Pain 13 opposed to Joy. 14 15 [5] Conscientiæ morsus–thus rendered by Mr. Pollock. 16 17
